WRITING: THE RIGHT WORD CLARIFIES

WRITING:  THE RIGHT WORD CLARIFIES                               June 30, 2017 . . . And, Interchangeability Doesn’t Always Work   Can the following words be used interchangeably in writing? Because                      Since                            As In most cases I say no, but I encourage you to decide after considering (a) examples of usage and (b) the fact that at times only a particular word can convey utmost clarity in both writing and speaking. A certain sentence from Writestyle’s Grammar course can make you think hard about this: [Because/Since/As] Ann was fired, I’ve been doing her work. Which word is correct to open the sentence? Let’s see how each affects the sentence and its meaning. Because:  Refers ideally to reasoning and/or consequence:  Because I was fired [Event #1], I have no money to pay the rent [Event #2]. “Because” seems to hint at a direct relationship between the two events; at times, it could or could not be a direct relationship.  “Because” would be clear and correct in the following sentence: “Because Ann was fired, I have to do her work.” Since:  Refers ideally and most clearly to the passage of time:  I’ve had no appetite or energy since Dad died. At the same time, many people often say things like, “Since [Because] I’m...

DANCING WITH THE STARS, POST-SEASON 24: June 30, 2017...

DANCING WITH THE STARS, POST-SEASON 24: June 30, 2017   Sometimes-pro Karina Smirnoff was at the Millennium Dance Sport Championships in Orlando this week. I like to see her back on Dancing With The Stars now and then. Judge Bruno Tonioli has been in London; says it’s hot there. It seems that Val and Jenna, too, are vacationing in Europe this week. Maks and Peta had lots of fun on their first father’s day with baby Shai. Peta says that Maks is the best dad and that they love their family sweat/workout sessions together. Reminder: They’ll get married next Saturday! Derek has been in Nantucket, RI this week and lovin’ it. He’ll have plenty to do at sister Julianne’s wedding next Saturday. One of Gleb and Elena’s favorite places is a horse farm in Sydney, Australia. She’s 34 weeks pregnant; so, probably due in July. On Tues., June 27, host Tom Bergeron visited the Hot Summer Nights pros on tour in NYC. Surprise! You can review the team’s tour schedule at our June 21 post. Judge Carrie Ann Inaba and her love, Robb Derringer, have been enjoying NYC this week. Today, she filled in for Kelly Ripa, co-hosting with Ryan Seacrest. Of course, her high-pitched giggle often rang out in the studio....

It can be a really short list, if you want. It can be celebs from past TV shows, current TV shows, and even movies. Let’s talk about these people and what would make them good dance contestants. Other topics:  What else would you like to talk about regarding Dancing with the Stars besides pros and celebs? Costumes? How eliminations are conducted? Dancing with the Stars NEWS, Post-Season 24: June 21, 2017...

DANCING WITH THE STARS, POST-SEASON 24: June 21, 2017 Hi, again, DWTS fans! I have some news and reminders for you. New Baby:  Last Sunday, Father’s Day, former DWTS pro Edyta Sliwinska presented her husband and former DWTS pro Alec Mazo with their second child. A daughter this time: Leia Josephine. The first, three years ago, was son Michael Alexander, who chose the name for his baby sister. Happy family! “Health Magazine”:  Dancing with the Stars Co-Host Erin Andrews is on the cover of the July/August 2017 issue, looking extremely fit and happy. No wonder! The 39-year-old has come out on the bright side of cervical cancer, she’s marrying the love of her life this summer, and she may be able to have a baby, after all, because she froze some of her eggs before receiving her cancer diagnosis last year. Go, Erin! “Little Big Shots”:  A recent episode of “Little Big Shots,” hosted by Steve Harvey, featured a couple of juvenile ballroom-dance experts from Italy who have danced together for some years. And they’re not even 10 years old!  The girl’s 8 and the boy’s 9. Fantastic and so cute! You may want to find a replay. New EP:  Mark your calendar for June 26! That’s when the...

WRITING: HOMONYMS–THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY...

WRITING:  HOMONYMS–THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY      June 21, 2017 Homonyms are words that sound the same but have different spellings, meanings, and purposes. In writing, they bring with them the good, the bad, and the ugly:   THE GOOD:     for rhyming, esp. when writing a poem THE BAD:         wrong word/wrong place/wrong time THE UGLY:       when people don’t care and don’t know the differences, and don’t check or correct their writing   For example, let’s look at “effect” vs. “affect,” which often cause confusion and trouble: “Effect” is a noun (What effect will this issue have on my job?) more often than it’s a verb (I will effect [produce] a solution to the problem today); “affect” is a verb (How will that problem affect my job?). Correct pronunciation helps to clarify spelling and usage: “ee-fect” (effect) vs. “uh-fect” (affect).   Remember: Using Spell Check while writing won’t catch homonym errors because the words sound alike. Two of the most-common homonym errors occur among the following groups of three:  to/two/too AND their/there/they’re. Writing the wrong word can result in embarrassment! When a contraction is involved, think about what it means. So, you’ll have to slow down a bit to think about meaning/intent and spelling while you write, and then...
