The Possible Ballroom & Latin Dances: Foxtrot, Quickstep, Waltz, Viennese Waltz, Tango, Argentine Tango, Jive, Jazz, Charleston, Contemporary; Cha-Cha, Samba, Salsa, Rumba, Paso Doble.    “Learn the dance, learn the steps, then learn the character of it.” — Len Goodman

Mon., Oct. 30, 2017:   Pros and troupe opened, dancing in scary getup.

  1. Victoria + Val: Viennese Waltz (“The Night We Met,” Lord Huron)      Judges: 9.  Me: 9.  Graceful, smooth, flowing, very pretty in beautiful attire; great hold/close connection and finished/graceful arms/hands.  She’s due for:  Waltz, Arg. Tango, Jive, Jazz, Contemporary; Samba, Salsa, Rumba.

2.  Jordan + Lindsay: Paso Doblé (“Animals,” Martin Garrix)             Judges: 10. Me: 10.

An untraditional but creatively cool and impressive Paso that contained all expected aggressive, large, rounded movements.   Outstanding choreo, Lindsay! Loved it! In the pre-dance package, Lindsay said that Mark Ballas taught her to dance when she was a little girl.

He’s due for:  Quickstep, Waltz, Arg. Tango, Jive, Jazz; Cha-Cha, Samba, Salsa.

  1. Nikki + Artem: Jive (“I Put a Spell on You,” Bette Midler [“Hocus Pocus”]). Judges: 8.  Me: 8.

A cute coffee-shop routine that was pretty good. Not quite as energetic, exciting, and musically connected (Nikki) as it could have been; kicks/flicks could have been even sharper, and they should have included traditional sideways and backwards kicks.

She’s due for:  Foxtrot, Quickstep, Charleston, Cha-Cha, Samba, Salsa, Rumba, Paso Doble.

  1. Vanessa + Maks: Paso Doblé (“Game of Survival,” Ruelle)               Judges: 8  Me: 8.5.

Maks moved marvelously, and Vanessa did pretty well while being mauled by zombies (including Maks). They had fun, but Vanessa’s Paso lacked sufficient expected large and rounded movements (it was aggressive, though).

She’s due forVien. Waltz, Tango, Arg. Tango, Jive, Charleston, Contemp.; Samba, Salsa.

  1. Terrell + Cheryl: Tango (“Super Freak,” Rick James)                         Judges: 8,8,9.  Me: 9.             In character, in hold, on beat in proper continuous footwork, and Cheryl looked very sexy. I just wish that we could have seen a truly believable sexy connection between them.  He’s due for:  Waltz, Arg. Tango, Jazz, Charleston, Contemp.; Samba, Rumba, Paso Doble.

6.  Lindsey + Mark: Paso Doblé (“Roundtable Rival,” Lindsey Stirling)    Judges 9,9,9.  Me 9.5.  She has a  blunt rib  injury and possible separation, which she sustained in rehearsal yesterday.  Prayers that she won’t be forced to forfeit her spot in the competition!  Choreo was difficult and excellent; well done, esp. through so much pain! Proper, intense, sharp, Loved it!  MY Dancing With The Stars DANCE OF THE NIGHT!
She’s due for:  Waltz, Tango, Jazz, Charleston, Contemporary; Samba, Salsa, Rumba.

  1. Frankie + Whitney: Contemporary (“Every Breath You Take,” Chase Holfelder) Judges: 10. Me: 9.  So dramatic and scary for a girl to have a guy watching/stalking her!  The connection between the two characters was cool, uncanny, and scary all at once. Unfortunately, Witney didn’t choreograph nearly as much actual dancing for Frankie as she did for herself; compared to Jordan and Lindsay’s contemporary of a few weeks ago, the male’s amount of dancing  was quite lacking. He’s due for:  Waltz, Vien. Waltz, Jive, Charleston, Cha-Cha, Salsa, Rumba, Paso Doble.
  1. Drew + Emma: Charleston (“Remains of the Day,” Danny Elfman)    Judges: 9.  Me: 9.   A cute, complicated, and energetic routine; in sync the whole way and very enjoyable.  He’s due for:  Waltz, Tango, Jazz, Contemporary; Cha-Cha, Samba, Salsa, Rumba.

SECOND DANCE:  Each celeb must dance on his/her own for 20 seconds.

Team Monster Mash (Captain Terrell Owens, Lindsey, Jordan, Nikki):  Many different dance styles (Jive, Foxtrot, Jitterbug, etc.) done with scary theme and all cutely in character in a cornfield; not always perfect or in sync, but very cute and clearly they worked hard.                            Judges: 8.  Me: 8.5.

Team Phantom of the Opera/Ballroom (Captain Drew Scott, Frankie, Vanessa, Victoria):  “Phantom” is Drew’s fave opera.  Consistently in-sync, smooth, theatrical dancing (Paso, Tango, Waltz).  Fabulous! Judges: 10.  Me: 10.

WHO WAS IN JEOPARDY?  Terrell, Drew, Nikki, Vanessa.

WHO WAS ELIMINATED TONIGHT?  Nikki and Vanessa in a surprise double elimination!
