Dancing With The Stars: Week 3 Analysis (Oct. 2, 2017):  Guilty Pleasures Week!

MON., OCT. 2          Drew Scott & Emma #1.                            1-800-868-3404

Arg. Tango (“Red Right Hand,” Nick Cave/Bad Seeds)   Judges’ scores 8-7-8.  Mine 8.5.

The positive:  Drew’s guilty pleasure is to watch true-crime shows.

Complete with cute personality bits; intense; lifts and lots of spins, and good transitions in and out of those; good posture, etc. Very well done & enjoyable!  Watch out!

The negative/work on:  Posture, quick arm extensions, keep arms/hands graceful.

He’s due for:  Waltz, Viennese Waltz, Tango, Jive, Jazz, Charleston, Contemporary; Cha-Cha, Samba, Salsa, Rhumba, Paso Doble.

MON., OCT. 2          Derek Fisher & Sharna #2.                       1-800-868-3403

Cha-Cha (“Fresh Prince of Bel Aire,” DJ Jazzy Jeff/Fresh Prince)  Judges’ scores 7-7-7. Mine 7.

The positive:  Derek’s guilty pleasure is to watch “Fresh Prince of Bel Aire.”

Great attitude, relaxed, fun. Rhythm, on beat; good facial expressions.

The negative/work on:  Not enough Cha-Cha dancing for him. Technique, control.

He’s due for:  Quickstep, Waltz, Viennese Waltz, Tango, Argentine Tango, Jive, Jazz, Charleston, Contemporary; Samba, Rhumba, Paso Doble.

MON., OCT. 2          Victoria Arlen & Val #3.                             1-800-868-3413
Quickstep
(“Tubthumping,” Chumbawamba)
                          Judges’ scores 8-7-7.  Mine 8.

The positive:  Victoria’s guilty pleasure is a song that got her through the hardships of wheelchairs, therapy to walk again, etc. Fun, joyful, energetic/bouncy. Good posture, hold, technique, extensions, footwork; usually in rhythm/step/timing.

Work on: Keep doing what you’re doing + work on achieving sufficient body contact.

She’s due for:  Foxtrot, Waltz, Argentine Tango, Viennese Waltz, Jive, Jazz, Charleston, Contemporary; Samba, Salsa, Rhumba, Paso Doble.

MON., OCT. 2          Vanessa Lachey & Alan for Maks #4.     1-800-868-3412

Jazz (“Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” Cyndi Lauper)                   Judges’ scores 7-8-8.  Mine 8.

The positive:  Vanessa’s guilty pleasure is to have girls’ nights out.  So much fun dancing with girl pros as her girlfriends; danced, at most, the last half of it with Alan. Great rhythm, posture, footwork, timing, lifts/spins; arms/hands graceful. Very good!

Work on:  They should have highlighted Vanessa more in the first half.

She’s due forQuickstep, Waltz, Viennese Waltz, Tango, Argentine Tango, Jive, Charleston, Contemporary; Samba, Salsa, Rhumba, Paso Doble.

MON., OCT. 2           Nikki Bella & Artem #5.                             1-800-868-3409

Vien. Waltz (“Love on the Brain,” Rihanna)                            Judges’ scores 7-7-7 .  Mine 7.

The positive:  Nikki’s guilty pleasure is to read romantic fiction. Intense, sexy, passionate with Nikki in sexy cut-leg costume—very unusual (inappropriate, I’d say) for a Vien. Waltz and much more like an Arg. Tango. A Vien. Waltz is usually beautiful and graceful, lots of continuous movement with the woman in a beautiful gown; not this. What were you thinking, Artem?  Good posture/hold/rhythm/flexibility/head positions & turns; graceful arms/hands, extensions.

The negative/work on:  Perfect footwork and leg-work.

She’s due for:  Foxtrot, Quickstep, Argentine Tango, Jive, Jazz, Charleston, Contemporary; Cha-Cha, Samba, Salsa, Rhumba, Paso Doble.

MON., OCT. 2          Frankie Muniz & Whitney #6.                   1-800-868-3405
Samba (“It’s Gonna Be Me,” NSync)
                                       Judges’ scores 7-7-7.  Mine 7.

The positive:  Frankie’s guilty pleasure is boy-bands.  So cute, celebratory, good footwork but should have been more bouncy; well-done turns and hold.

The negative/work on: Hips are a bit stiff and need more action.

He’s due for:  Quickstep, Waltz, Viennese Waltz, Argentine Tango, Jive, Jazz, Charleston, Contemporary; Cha-Cha, Salsa, Rhumba, Paso Doble.

MON., OCT. 2          Lindsey Stirling & Mark #7.                     1-800-868-3407

Jive (“Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go,” Wham!)                       Judges’ scores 9-9-9.  Mine 10.

The positive:  Lindsey’s guilty pleasure is to stay in her pajamas all day long whenever possible. WOW!  Too cute!  Fun, extremely energetic, perfect content, sharp kicks/flicks and plenty of them.  Perfect rhythm, timing, hips/legs/extensions/arms/hands/feet, etc., animated facial expressions. Fab choreo!  Loved it!  My DANCE OF THE NIGHT!

She’s due for:  Foxtrot, Waltz, Viennese Waltz, Tango, Argentine Tango, Jazz, Charleston, Contemporary; Samba, Salsa, Rhumba, Paso Doble.

MON., OCT. 2           Nick Lachey & Peta  #8.                            1-800-868-3408

Jazz (“Jump! [For My Love,]” The Pointer Sisters)                      Judges’ scores 7-7-7.  Mine 7.

The positive:  Nick’s guilty pleasure is to watch romantic comedies.  Cute, fun dancing based on exercise in leotards.  Pretty good. One of his best efforts to date.

The negative/work on:  Turns, open movements/extensions, , rhythm, hip looseness rolls, open shoulders/chest in straight posture, bounce in footwork where required.

He’s due for:  Quickstep, Waltz, Viennese Waltz, Tango, Argentine Tango, Jive, Charleston, Contemporary; Samba, Salsa, Rhumba, Paso Doble.

MON., OCT. 2          Sasha Pieterse & Gleb #9.                        1-800-868-3410

Jazz (“I Can’t Help Myself [Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch],” Four Tops) Judges’ scores 7-6-6.  Mine 5.

The positive:  Sasha’s guilty pleasure is to bake, but we didn’t need to be knocked over the head with it.

The negative/work on:  One of the laziest “dances” I’ve ever seen on this show—it contained barely any actual dancing.  Gleb went way overboard to please Sasha—mistake.  I’m surprised that Len gave as much as a 6.

She’s due for:  Foxtrot, Quickstep, Waltz, Tango, Argentine Tango, Jive, Charleston, Contemporary; Samba, Salsa, Rhumba, Paso Doble.

MON., OCT. 2          Terrell Owens & Cheryl #10.                    1-800-868-3411
Salsa (“The Breaks,” Kurtis Blow)
                                           Judges’ scores 7-7-7.  Mine 7.5.

The positive:  Terrell’s guilty pleasure is to eat chocolate. Rhythm, attitude, entertaining, good overall  body movement and footwork. Don’t take your eye off them.

The negative/work on:  Leaned forward a little once or twice; ignore your height and stand straight. Overall, needed more bounce in the footwork.

He’s due for:  Quickstep, Waltz, Viennese Waltz, Tango, Argentine Tango, Jive, Jazz, Charleston, Contemporary; Samba, Rhumba, Paso Doble.

MON., OCT. 2             Jordan Fisher & Lindsay #11.                  1-800-868-3406

Charleston (“Glory Days,” Michael Giacchino)                        Judges’ scores 9-7-9.  Mine 9.5.

The positive:  Jordan’s guilty pleasure is his love of comic books and superheroes. They started with back handsprings!  WOW!  Enough clever Charleston content (but without the hands-crossing-knees that I like to see).  He’s a natural–a joy to watch!

He’s due for:  Foxtrot, Quickstep, Waltz, Argentine Tango, Jive, Jazz, Contemporary; Cha-Cha, Samba, Salsa, Rhumba, Paso Doble.

(Somehow, I goofed up my numbering, but I’m pretty sure that Nick and Sasha are in sequence.)

WHO WAS ELIMINATED MONDAY NIGHT?  None today, probably in honor of/remembering the victims of Sunday night’s mass shooting in Las Vegas.  Someone will go home next Monday.

WHO SHOULD BE ELIMINATED NEXT WEEK?  Sasha.

MY IN-IT-TO-WIN-IT PICKS:  Lindsey Stirling, Vanessa Lachey, Jordan Fisher. After them, watch out especially for Nikki Bella and Drew Scott.

WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO SAY ABOUT Dancing with the Stars?
