Dancing With The Stars: Week 2 Analysis (Sep. 25, 2017):

MONDAY:  BALLROOM DANCING

TUESDAY:  LATIN DANCING

MON., SEP. 25         Frankie Muniz & Whitney #8.                   1-800-868-3405

Tradl. Tango (“Whatever It Takes,” Imagine Dragons)        Judges’ scores 8-7-8.  Mine 8.5.

The positive:  Serious, into it, on target, aggressive enough; well-done turns and hold, graceful arms/hands; pretty, graceful dance. He’s adorable and will keep improving.

The negative/work on: Hips are a bit stiff, probably because of his old back injury. Loosen up the occasional stiffness and let go into the joy of the dance.

He’s due for:  Quickstep, Waltz, Viennese Waltz, Argentine Tango, Jive, Jazz, Charleston, Contemporary; Cha-Cha, Samba, Salsa, Rhumba, Paso Doble.

TUES., SEP. 26       Frankie Muniz & Whitney #12

Untraditional Cha-Cha (“Perm,” Bruno Mars)                  Judges’ scores 8-8-9.  Mine 6.5.

The positive:  Not bad, considering what he was given. BUT, not nearly enough proper Cha-Cha content, after Witney wasted 25% of time in the opener. She then inserted other dance styles as a further waste of time. The judges WAY over-scored Witney’s ridiculous choreo. He’s much better than this. Get it together, Witney!

The negative/work on:  Loose hip movement.

He’s due for:  Quickstep, Waltz, Viennese Waltz, Argentine Tango, Jive, Jazz, Charleston, Contemporary; Samba, Salsa, Rhumba, Paso Doble.

MON., SEP. 25         Nick Lachey & Peta #5.                            1-800-868-3408

Foxtrot (“Mandy,” Barry Manilow)                            Judges’ scores 7-6-6.  Mine 6.5.

The positive:  Love the song! Attractive dancing—improved. CAI over-scored him a little. I think he might improve just a little. Loved Peta’s conservative, beautiful dress.

The negative/work on:  Turns, open movements/extensions, rhythm, hip looseness rolls, open shoulders/chest in straight posture, bounce in footwork where required.

He’s due for:  Quickstep, Waltz, Viennese Waltz, Tango, Argentine Tango, Jive, Jazz, Charleston, Contemporary; Samba, Salsa, Rhumba, Paso Doble.

TUES., SEP. 26        Nick Lachey & Peta #5.

Argentine Tango (“She’s a Lady,” Lion Babe)     Judges’ scores 7-6-6.  Mine 6.5.

The positive:  Dramatic, somewhat passionate. The hip-work was a little better.

The negative/work on:  Rhythm, proper & stronger/sharper foot/body movements, overall technique.

He’s due for:  Quickstep, Waltz, Viennese Waltz, Tango, Jive, Jazz, Charleston, Contemporary; Samba, Salsa, Rhumba, Paso Doble.

MON., SEP. 25        Drew Scott & Emma #6.                1-800-868-3404

Quickstep (“Sing, Sing, Sing,” Louis Prima)           Judges’ scores 7-6-7.  Mine 8.

The positive:   Lots of intricate footwork that he pulled off well. Enthusiastic, energetic, well done. I like him a lot–glad he’s on Dancing With The Stars! He’ll continue to improve; watch out.

The negative/work on:  Posture, quick arm extensions, keep arms/hands graceful.

He’s due for:  Waltz, Viennese Waltz, Tango, Argentine Tango, Jive, Jazz, Charleston, Contemporary; Cha-Cha, Samba, Salsa, Rhumba, Paso Doble.

TUES., SEP. 26       Drew Scott & Emma #7.

Rhumba (“Lights Down Low,” Max)                                     Judges’ scores 7-7-7.  Mine 8.

The positive: Sweet couple/smart pairing. He clearly works very hard. A traditional, well-choreographed Rhumba. Good spins/leg and arm extensions/lines, good footwork. The teamwork/dance was dramatic, passionate, believable. Very pretty!

The negative/work on:  Learn to move hips more.

He’s due for:  Waltz, Viennese Waltz, Tango, Argentine Tango, Jive, Jazz, Charleston, Contemporary; Cha-Cha, Samba, Salsa, Paso Doble.

MON., SEP. 25         Derek Fisher & Sharna #12.                     1-800-868-3403

Foxtrot (“Hallelujah! I Love Her So,” Ray Charles) Judges’ scores 6-6-7. Mine 7.5.

The positive:  Rhythm, on beat; good facial expressions, smooth, hands/arms largely graceful; improved posture; pretty-good rise/fall in footwork but need to straighten feet.

The negative/work on:  Technique, control.

He’s due for:  Quickstep, Waltz, Viennese Waltz, Tango, Argentine Tango, Jive, Jazz, Charleston, Contemporary; Cha-Cha, Samba, Rhumba, Paso Doble.

TUES., SEP. 26       Derek Fisher & Sharna #3.

Paso Doble (“Diablo Rojo,” Rodrigo y Gabriella)   Judges’ scores 7-6-6.  Mine 7.

The positive:  Good name in a Paso song! Rhythm, largely on beat; confidence.

The negative/work onOvercome the forward-leaning posture that showed again a little bit. I think he could have danced a little larger and maintained more of the required technique through greater control.

He’s due for:  Quickstep, Waltz, Viennese Waltz, Tango, Argentine Tango, Jive, Jazz, Charleston, Contemporary; Cha-Cha, Samba, Rhumba.

MON., SEP. 25         Jordan Fisher & Lindsay #13.                  1-800-868-3406

Vien. Waltz (“Count on Me,” Judah Kelly)                           Judges’ scores 8-8-8.  Mine 9.

The positive:  WOW! Very-good focus/rhythm/legwork/footwork/turns/head movement/overall posture/hold/hips/pointed toes/leading/confidence; smooth nearly all the way. Very pretty and enjoyable. I did not want their dancing to stop! Judges under-scored him. My #2 DANCE OF THE NIGHT.

The negative/work on:  May need to learn to open shoulders/chest and dance largely when he gets into other kinds of dances, esp. the Paso Doble; we’ll see.

He’s due for:  Foxtrot, Quickstep, Waltz, Argentine Tango, Jive, Jazz, Charleston, Contemporary; Cha-Cha, Samba, Salsa, Rhumba, Paso Doble.

TUES., SEP. 26       Jordan Fisher & Lindsay #6.

Samba (“Mi Gente,” J. Balvin & Willy William)                     Judges’ scores 8-8-8.  Mine 9.

The positive:  WOW! A full, traditional, proper Samba! Complete with the side-by-side ‘walk’ and arm/shoulder rolls. Thank you, Lindsay! Great spotting/turns by Jordan. A fabulous match-up between this pair. I like him! Judges under-scored him. My #1 DANCE OF THE NIGHT.

Foxtrot (“Hit Me With a Hot Note,” Tami T. Damiano)         Judges’ scores 8-8-8.  Mine 9.

The positive:            In her gold gown, she said she looked like a Mirrorball. Great rhythm, hip rolls, posture, footwork, timing; arms/hands graceful. Very good but not quite as enjoyable for me as last week’s dance. My #2 DANCE OF THE NIGHT.

Quickstep (“Swing Set,” Jurassic 5)                        Judges’ scores 7-7-7.  Mine 8.5.

The negative/work on: Dancing should have flowed a bit better; needed more on-target rhythm, bounce; perfect footwork and leg-work.

She’s in the game—much better than Nick and Sasha and deserves to stay!

He’s due for:  Quickstep, Waltz, Viennese Waltz, Tango, Argentine Tango, Jive, Jazz, Charleston, Contemporary; Salsa, Rhumba, Paso Doble.

“Learn the dance, learn the steps, then learn the character of it.” — Len Goodman

BIG SURPRISE!  We had no clue until he stepped forward and removed his head gear, but Derek Hough danced with Light Balance on the “America’s Got Talent” finale last week. WOW!  Once revealed, he was as cute and fun as ever!

Tuesday: Latin dancing.

Just before Tuesday’s show, “Celebrity Family Feud” aired. For Dancing with the Stars it featured pro dancers Kym Johnson, Sharna Burgess, Lindsay Arnold, Sasha Farber, and Keo Motsepe. Present for “Shark Tank” were investors Robert Herjavec (Kym’s hubby), QVC Queen Lori Greiner, Daymond John, Christopher Sacca,         and Sabin Lomac.  DWTS won rounds 1 & 3. ST won rounds 2 & 4 and totaled 300+ points first but could not total 200 points for the final win for charity. What fun!
