Dancing With The Stars: Week 8 Analysis and Results

Dancing With The Stars (DWTS) Season 23/Fall 2016: Oct. 31 →   The Cast: Pros + Stars Val Chmerkovskiy + Laurie Hernandez, U.S. Olympic Gymnast Cheryl Burke + Ryan Lochte, U.S. Olympic Swimmer Sasha Farber + Terra Jolé, Reality TV Star Derek Hough + Marilu Henner, Actress/Author Lindsay Arnold + Calvin Johnson, NFL Wide Receiver, “Megatron” Sharna Burgess + James Hinchcliffe, Pro Race Car Driver Gleb Savchenko + Jana Kramer, Country Music Singer/Actress Dancing With The Stars: Week 8 Analysis On Halloween Night, Dancing With the Stars opened with a dance by pros that had the guys in dead-body shapes that moved with them on the floor—cool! I anticipated certain performances and moves by judges, so I wasn’t surprised. Some judging was accurate, and some was off target. Terra Jolé: Cha-Cha with Sasha. Judges’ score 8. My score 8.5. The positive: She’s SO CUTE and gets deeply into her role with darling facial expressions. She’s small, but her entertainment value is gigantic. It wasn’t a knock-your-socks-off dance, but it was cute, fun, and very well done. A slight negative: This time, Sasha didn’t choreo dance to quite all of the music but should have.   Laurie Hernandez: V. Waltz.             Judges’ score 10. My score 10. The positive: It was elegant, lyrical, smooth, flowing, and just plain boo-tiful. Val was very emotional.   Marilu Henner: Arg. Tango inside a spider web! Judges’ scores 7-8-8. My score 8.75. The positive: Sharp yet graceful. She made a few tiny mistakes: a tiny misstep away from her chair toward Derek in the opening and a partially incorrect connective arm movement near the end. Otherwise, it was very good. The negative: Let go more.   Calvin Johnson: Quickstep.             Judges’ score 10. My score 10. The positive: Calvin truly has stepped into the upper league, which he began to display two weeks ago. Wow! He has such accurate technique, timing, and footwork, never missing anything and always in sync with Lindsay. Loved it! “My” Dance of the Night!   Ryan Lochte: Arg. Tango. Judges’ scores 7-8-8. My score 8. The positive: I repeat that he’s come a long way, and he did better tonight than last week, especially in entertainment value, but his caliber in dance certainly does not compare to the quality of Marilu’s. Yet, the judges gave these competitors the same dance tonight (shock?) and scored him and Marilu exactly the same—big surprise (not). The negative: STILL needs to be careful of his posture and to truly feel the music. He...

Dancing With The Stars Week 7 Analysis and Results

Dancing With The Stars Season 23/Fall 2016: Oct. 24 →   The Cast: Pros + Stars Val Chmerkovskiy + Laurie Hernandez, U.S. Olympic Gymnast Cheryl Burke + Ryan Lochte, U.S. Olympic Swimmer Artem Chigvintsev + Maureen McCormick, Actress (“Marcia,”“Brady Bunch” TV show, 1960s/1970s) Sasha Farber + Terra Jolé, Reality TV Star Derek Hough + Marilu Henner, Actress/Author Lindsay Arnold + Calvin Johnson, NFL Wide Receiver, “Megatron” Sharna Burgess + James Hinchcliffe, Pro Race Car Driver Gleb Savchenko + Jana Kramer, Country Music Singer/Actress Dancing With The Stars: Week 7 Analysis & Results On Dancing With The Stars tonight, each couple performed to represent a particular decade/era in American history. Young celeb Laurie and young pro Lindsay learned quite a bit about their respective decades. Most of the judging was on target; Len was back from England, and Julianne stayed on the panel. Tom and Erin hosted.                 . Individual Dances: Laurie Hernandez: 1960s Quickstep. Judges’ scores 8-8-9-9. My score 8.5. The positive: “One Fine Day” (The Chiffons). Very fast! Laurie just attended her first prom and received her first corsage from a “boy.” Her naivete, eagerness, and devotion to Val are cute and endearing. It was sweet, highly energetic, and very well done. The negative: She still needs to be careful of her posture during some transitions. Val choreographed an unnecessarily extensive delay before the dance began. CA took off a point for the lift Val did near the end.   Ryan Lochte: 1990s Rhumba. Judges’ score 7. My score 7. The positive: “I Don’t Want to Miss A Thing” (Aerosmith). Some weeks ago, Ryan pretty much mastered certain moves/techniques: standing/keeping his lines straight while transitioning her, sometimes with one hand behind his back, but he has largely missed much of the rest of it. The negative: It was basically more of the same below-par work from Ryan, with him doing what she tells him to do and her doing much more dancing and the intricate moves. The only bit of sexiness in a dance that is supposed to be intensely sexy was Cheryl contorting around him. The main requirement that he missed was passion; the dance had zero of the required high level of passion and zero of a strong connection within the role with his partner. He still needs to work on moving his hips more, making his hands more graceful, feeling/connecting with/involving himself in the music, and immersing himself in the role. Again: He has not improved enough to earn the right to still be in the competition; he...

Dancing With The Stars Week 6 Analysis and Results

Dancing With The Stars (DWTS) Season 23/Fall 2016: Oct. 17 →   The Cast: Pros + Stars Val Chmerkovskiy + Laurie Hernandez, U.S. Olympic Gymnast Cheryl Burke + Ryan Lochte, U.S. Olympic Swimmer Artem Chigvintsev + Maureen McCormick, Actress (“Marcia,”“Brady Bunch” TV show, 1960s/1970s) Maksim Chmerkovskiy + Amber Rose, Talk Show Host/Activist Sasha Farber + Terra Jolé, Reality TV Star Derek Hough + Marilu Henner, Actress/Author Lindsay Arnold + Calvin Johnson, NFL Wide Receiver, “Megatron” Sharna Burgess + James Hinchcliffe, Pro Race Car Driver Gleb Savchenko + Jana Kramer, Country Music Singer/Actress   Dancing With The Stars: Week 6 Analysis It’s Latin Night on Dancing with the Stars! Pitbull performed and served as the guest judge in Len’s spot. Why did they give the first set of results right before the dancing started? I don’t like that. How could a competitor concentrate on the new dance after being told that he/she is in jeopardy for leaving the show later in the night? Most of the stars upped their game while a few stayed their status quo and one or two slipped a bit. The landscape changed when Calvin climbed either to the top of the middle of the pack or out of it. Some of the judging was on target, a few were too low, and a few were too high. Tom and Erin hosted. Ryan Lochte: Salsa. Judges’ scores 7-8-8-7. My score 7. The positive: He’s a nice guy whose skills have improved and who sometimes shows good lines. The negative: I think he peaked at low to mid-range a couple of weeks ago, having shown some improvement. Why do judges and viewers keep hyping him?! No, Julianne, he did NOT nail it, Olympian or not. His rhythm/timing, hold, and footwork ranged from 50% to 75% accurate. He needs to learn how to coordinate his feet/legs with his hips; still needs to monitor his posture and work on transitions in body and feet. Get over this guy! He’s been here too long and should go home before votes for him knock out a competitor who truly deserves to stay in this competition.   Terra Jolé: Paso Doble. Judges’ scores 7-8-8-7. My score 7. The positive: Can she and Sasha get any cuter? She works hard, and the packages of her and Sasha are adorable. Her ruffled gown was cute. Sasha had intricate choreo to a fast, difficult song. The negative: She slipped a bit tonight; kept looking to Sasha for guidance and was too dependent on him. She...

Dancing With The Stars: Week 5 Analysis

Dancing With The Stars (DWTS) Season 23/Fall 2016: Oct. 10, Week 5 Analysis →   The Cast: Pros + Stars Val Chmerkovskiy + Laurie Hernandez, U.S. Olympic Gymnast Cheryl Burke + Ryan Lochte, U.S. Olympic Swimmer Artem Chigvintsev + Maureen McCormick, Actress (“Marcia,”“Brady Bunch” TV show, 1960s/1970s) Maksim Chmerkovskiy + Amber Rose, Talk Show Host/Activist Sasha Farber + Terra Jolé, Reality TV Star Derek Hough + Marilu Henner, Actress/Author Lindsay Arnold + Calvin Johnson, NFL Wide Receiver, “Megatron” Sharna Burgess + James Hinchcliffe, Pro Race Car Driver Gleb Savchenko + Jana Kramer, Country Music Singer Dancing With The Stars: Week 5 Analysis Tonight’s show opened with the pros dancing to the theme from “Titanic.” Beautiful! Stars reflected on and danced in remembrance of their individual Most-Memorable Years. Stories from Maureen, Marilu, Jana, and Terra were heartbreaking while those from Calvin, Ryan, Amber, and Laurie were more upbeat. The real clincher was James, who is a living miracle; 18 months ago he survived a race-car crash that, according to his doctor, should have killed him or anyone else. James had to learn to walk again, and now he’s dancing as a natural, as if he’d always done so. Surprisingly, judging was pretty accurate. Maureen McCormick: Foxtrot. Judges’ scores 8-8-8. My score 9. The positive: The choreo and the execution were lovely, smooth, graceful, and flowing. Maureen was very happy, then emotional but controlled and deeply into the dance. Really enjoyed it!   Calvin Johnson: Jazz.             Judges’ scores 8-8-8. My score 8. The positive: A mix of traditional and modern, his dance was fun and well done. Jerry Rice was a surprise guest for him, which made it even more fun. This guy is adorable. What’s not to like? The negative: He’ll need to keep monitoring his posture and to make his hands a bit more graceful.   Jana Kramer: Contemporary. Judges’ scores 9-8-9. My score 9.5. The positive: Gorgeous flow, transitions, lifts; etc., even a face-forward “fall” of trust toward Gleb, who caught her. WOW!   Ryan Lochte: Contemporary. Judges’ scores 8-8-8. My score 8. The positive: He’s still showing up and working hard, and it’s paying off. The negative: Although he has improved and looked pretty good out there, I still consider him to be inconsistent. His dance truly was pretty. Jana’s contemporary was even better, though.   Laurie Hernandez: Paso Doble. Judges’ scores 8-9-8. My score 9. The positive: Sharp, strong, passionate, and well done. The negative: Bruno and Carrie Ann said they saw a few small mistakes....

Dancing With The Stars Season 23 Fall 2016: Week 4 Analysis

Dancing With The Stars (DWTS) Fall 2016: Oct. 3-4 →   The Cast: Val Chmerkovskiy                   with                 Laurie Hernandez, U.S. Olympic Gymnast Cheryl Burke                            with                 Ryan Lochte, U.S. Olympic Swimmer Artem Chigvintsev                  with                 Maureen McCormick, Actress (“Marcia,”                                                                                                                “Brady Bunch” TV show from 1960s/1970s) Maksim Chmerkovskiy           with                 Amber Rose, Talk Show Host/Activist Sasha Farber                             with                 Terra Jolé, Reality TV Star Derek Hough                            with                 Marilu Henner, Actress/Author Lindsay Arnold                         with                 Calvin Johnson, NFL Wide Receiver, “Megatron” Allison Holker                           with                 “BabyFace” Edmonds, Singer Witney Carson                          with                 Vanilla Ice, Singer Sharna Burgess                         with                 James Hinchcliffe, Pro Race Car Driver Gleb Savchenko                        with                 Jana Kramer, Country Music Singer/Actress Dancing With The Stars: Week 4 Analysis Monday was Cirque du Soleil night—filled with high-flying talent, color, and fun. It brought two big surprises; one was Ryan, and the other was Amber, and I was relieved to have been sitting down. Tom told us that two dancers would be eliminated the next night, and I hoped they would be Ryan and Amber. Tuesday night was the results show, revealing who was eliminated. Tom and Erin hosted both nights. Carrie Ann, Julianne, and Bruno judged (Len’s back in the UK this week). The judges’ scores, by and large, were on target this week, with a few off. In certain cases the trend continues to give shockingly low scores to certain celebs who truly earned higher marks. At one point I was distracted, so I apologize if I put a couple of celebs in the wrong order (not that it affects anything). Calvin Johnson: Traditional/Modified Charleston. Judges’ scores 8-7-8. My score 8.5. The positive: Cute choreo by Lindsay. Calvin did fab lifts/catches. His posture was good and he was graceful. He has improved majorly! And he keeps getting even more likable, if that’s possible. The judges scored a little low. The negative: He’s so entertaining that I didn’t notice anything.   Maureen McCormick: Traditional Argentine Tango. Judges’ scores 8-8-8. My score 8. The positive: Maureen continues to improve her technique and to have a great attitude. Her lines in this Arg. Tango were lovely. She and Artem worked very hard this week to earn what they received. Even though her scores matched Amber’s for the same kind of a dance, she is a much better dancer than Amber. The negative: Must work on sharpening kicks.   Jana Kramer: Traditional/Modified Foxtrot. Judges’ score 8-7-8. My score 8.5. The positive: I repeat: This girl is a naturally gifted dancer who consistently shows gorgeous lines, follow-through,...
