Dancing with the Stars Fall Season 2015, Week 3 Analysis:

Dancing with the Stars Fall Season 2015, Week 3 Analysis:   On Dancing With The Stars, the third week presented an unprecedented and heartbreaking situation. Fortunately, the teams had to learn only one dance for “TV Night.” The celebs either maintained or improved.   Singer/Host Tamar Braxton with pro partner Val Chmerkovskiy Actor Gary Busey with pro partner Anna Trebunskaya Backstreet Boys Singer Nick Carter with pro partner Sharna Burgess Domestic Diva Paula Deen with pro partner Louis Van Amstel Victor Espinoza with pro partner Karina Smirnoff Singer Andy Grammer with pro partner Allison Holker Teen Social Media Geek Hayes Grier with pro partner Emma Slater Actress Bindi Irwin with pro partner Derek Hough Singer Chaka Khan with pro partner Keo Motsepe Actress Alexa PenaVega with pro partner Mark Ballas Actor/Singer Carlos PenaVega with pro partner Witney Carson Army Hero Alek Skarlatos with pro partner Lindsay Arnold Atlanta Housewife Kim Zollciak Biermann with pro partner Tony Dovolani   Monday, September 28 The females opened the show—some pros and some from the troupe—sexy! Tom was joined by Miss Piggy of “The Muppets,” who said of Erin, “Who needs her?” Alfonso Ribeiro (“Ribero”), season 19 winner with Witney, was the guest judge. I apologize that I did not always have time to record the song that each pair danced to. Viewers are supposed to vote for a switch-up of couples to take place in two weeks. Again, most judges’ scores were accurate tonight; one or two were excessive or underrated.   Carlos PeneVega: Jazz. Judges’ scores 7-8-8-8. My score 8. The negative: He must focus on opening his chest and shoulders and on extending his arms without rushing. The positive: Animated, fun, cute; good acting of elderly couple dancing in the park. I liked it.   Paula Deen: Samba. Judges’ score 6. My score 6. The negative and the positive: She didn’t bounce quite consistently enough; lost timing/footwork partway through and didn’t really seem to recover. She didn’t let it stop her, though, and kept doing her best. It was a cute representation of Mrs. Howell on “Gilligan’s Island.” Witnessing her dedication and drive, one can understand how she became such a successful domestic diva in cooking and household goods.   Tamar Braxton: Tango. Judges’ scores 8-9-8-8. My score 9. The negative: What? The positive: Intense, sexy, sharp, continuous, and correct, with steaming chemistry between the two. Loved it! Tamar is a serious contender!   Alexa PenaVega: Jazz, “Breaking Bad.” Judges’ score 9. My score 9. The negative: ? The positive:...

Dancing with the Stars Fall Season 2015, Week 2 Analysis:

Dancing with the Stars Fall Season 2015, Week 2 Analysis: Many thanks to all of you for enduring the delay for this analysis, following my family’s intensely difficult week of surgery and more, including both expected and unexpected medical fallout that exhausted us while gobbling the week. Whew! Dancing With The Stars had an unprecedented second week–two nights, with celebs performing TWO different dances. That’s a lot to ask in only week two, especially from celebs who had no previous dance experience!   Everybody hung in there, though, and did as much as possible and as well as possible while Tom and Erin provided their dependable support and humor. It was Hometown Week, which featured the celeb on one night and that celeb’s pro on the other.   Singer/Host Tamar Braxton with pro partner Val Chmerkovskiy Actor Gary Busey with pro partner Anna Trebunskaya Backstreet Boys Singer Nick Carter with pro partner Sharna Burgess Domestic Diva Paula Deen with pro partner Louis Van Amstel Victor Espinoza with pro partner Karina Smirnoff Singer Andy Grammer with pro partner Allison Holker Teen Social Media Geek Hayes Grier with pro partner Emma Slater Actress Bindi Irwin with pro partner Derek Hough Singer Chaka Khan with pro partner Keo Motsepe Actress Alexa PenaVega with pro partner Mark Ballas Actor/Singer Carlos PenaVega with pro partner Witney Carson Army Hero Alek Skarlatos with pro partner Lindsay Arnold Atlanta Housewife Kim Zollciak Biermann with pro partner Tony Dovolani   Most judges’ scores were accurate; a few overshot the mark or shortchanged a good performance. I was relieved to see improvement where I expected to see it and surprised to see some where I doubted I’d see it. Here’s what happened during the two nights of “Hometown”–Monday and Tuesday, September 21 and 22, in sequence.   Monday, September 21:   Nick Carter: Jive. Judges’ score 7. My score 7. The negative: Slipped early on (could happen to anyone). He had fun but appeared to be concerned at times. His kicks were not sharp enough, and the dance, in my opinion, needed more jive content. Needs to keep improving techniques and gaining confidence. The positive: It was a cute routine. He recovered well and quickly after that early slip. He shows great promise. Someone said, “Come on, you’re a Backstreet Boy–you can do this!” That’s right! I can’t wait to see him lose himself in the dance and soar–it’ll be fabulous!   Paula Deen: Rhumba. Judges’ scores 7-6-6. My score 6.5. The negative and the positive: Her nerves were...

Dancing with the Stars Fall Season 2015 Opener, Week 1 Analysis

Dancing with the Stars Fall Season 2015 Opener, Week 1 Analysis: The fall season started strongly in front of El Capitan Theatre, in the street, with the pros joined by a huge flash mob. Great excitement and a fun way to open the show and the season! Hosts again are the ever-entertaining Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews. Tamar Braxton with pro partner Val Chmerkovskiy Gary Busey with pro partner Anna Trebunskaya Nick Carter with pro partner Sharna Burgess Paula Deen with pro partner Louis Van Amstel Victor Espinoza with pro partner Karina Smirnoff Andy Grammer with pro partner Allison Holker Hayes Grier with pro partner Emma Slater Bindi Irwin with pro partner Derek Hough Chaka Khan with pro partner Keo Motsepe Alexa PenaVega with pro partner Mark Ballas Carlos PenaVega with pro partner Witney Carson Alek Skarlatos with pro partner Lindsay Arnold Kim Zollciak Biermann with pro partner Tony Dovolani Some contestants performed as though it’s week six; certain others seemed to have had only one lesson. Most judges’ scores were accurate; a few overshot the mark or slightly shortchanged a good performance. On this first night I felt both very impressed and very disappointed. Here’s what happened tonight, in the order in which the contestants appeared; my informed opinions of the performances, in order of the contestants’ appearances, the judges’ scores and mine follow. Often, the first contestant gets cheated on scores. Not this time. Jockey Victor Espinoza: Salsa. Judges’ score 5. My score 5. The negative: Lacked proper musicality, timing, sufficient rhythm, technique, posture/lines, follow-through, salsa content. Showed some rushed, jerky movements. The positive: Nice, enthusiastic guy. Decent hip action. He may improve somewhat.   Singer/host Tamar Braxton: Quickstep. Judges’ score 8. My score 8. The negative: Footwork was a tad off at times, but WOW for week 1! The positive: Energetic, confident, fun; animated face. Good timing/musicality/ technique. Good posture/lines overall, but needs some improvement. Good control, especially in such an unusually fast, challenging quickstep. She’ll keep improving. Keep an eye on her!   Singer Chaka Khan: Cha-Cha. Judges’ scores 5-4-4 . My score 4. The negative: A somewhat gimmicky opening. Timing/technique/musicality/confidence/ focus way off. Didn’t seem to have any rhythm. Didn’t appear to be nervous, so we can’t blame this poor performance on nerves. The positive: She was lively and having fun. Even though she shows little promise, I hope that, if she isn’t voted off, she may manage to show at least minimal improvement.   Teen Social Media Geek Hayes Grier: Cha-Cha. Judges’ score...
